Frequently asked questions
Mini Scuba Tanks
Can I disassemble it myself?
No, it is not recommended to disassemble a SMACO mini scuba tank on your own. SMACO diving tanks are high-precision products, and unauthorized disassembly and assembly can result in damage or malfunction. It is crucial to maintain the integrity of the tank and ensure its proper functioning.
If you have any concerns or require assistance with a SMACO diving tank, please email our customer support team at contact@smacodive.com for expert guidance.
How long does a full tank last?
The duration depends on two factors:
- Your breathing rate, and
- The model and capacity of the tank.
Approximate usage times are as follows:
0.5L Tanks: Up to 10 min
0.7L Tanks: Up to 15 min
1L Tanks: Up to 20 min
2L Tanks: Up to 35 min
Actual usage time will vary based on depth, breathing technique, and personal air consumption. For your safety, always monitor the pressure gauge. If the pressure gauge shows less than 2 MPa, return to the surface and refill before diving again.
Can I use it for deep diving?
No. SMACO mini scuba tanks are not designed for deep diving.
- 0.5–0.7 L tanks have a maximum depth of 5 meters (16 feet). When used with a full-face mask, the maximum depth is 3 meters (10 feet).
- Larger SMACO tanks may be used as a primary air source only up to 10 meters (33 feet).
SMACO tanks are intended for shallow-water exploration, training, and emergency backup—not for deep or technical diving.
Can I use it for freediving?
No, SMACO mini scuba tanks are not designed or recommended for freediving. It is specifically designed for surface-supplied shallow water exploration and should not be used for breath-hold diving activities.
It is important to use the appropriate equipment for each specific diving activity to ensure safety and enjoyment.
Remember, if you have any concerns or require assistance with a SMACO diving tank, please email our customer support team at contact@smacodive.com for expert guidance.
Can I travel by plane with it?
Yes—you can travel by plane with a SMACO mini scuba tank as long as it is completely empty and depressurized.
For air travel, the tank must:
- Be fully emptied to 0 bar/psi
- Have the valve removed
- Be declared at check-in or security screening
If requested by the airline, you can easily remove the valve from the tank by unscrewing the upper valve assembly. This allows security staff to verify the tank contains no compressed air.
Once the valve is removed and the tank is declared empty, most airlines will allow it in checked baggage. Policies may vary, so always check with your airline before traveling.
What kind of air should I fill the tank with?
Only fill SMACO tanks with compressed air that meets human respiratory standards (EN12021). Do not use oxygen or other gases, as they may damage the internal system and pose safety risks.
How do I refill the tank?
There are four approved methods for refilling a SMACO mini scuba tank:
1. You can transfer air from a larger scuba tank into your SMACO tank using the proper SMACO Refill Adapter. Larger tanks must have enough pressure remaining to completely fill the mini tank.
2. Most dive shops can refill the tank using a SMACO Refill Adapter. Always inform the shop of your tank’s working pressure and ensure the tank is inspected before filling.
3. Refill with a high-pressure air compressor. The SMACO HEAP 1 allows you to refill the tank at home or anywhere you have access to a car battery or power outlet. Be sure to follow the compressor’s safety instructions and filtration requirements.
4. Refill with a high-pressure hand pump as a backup or emergency filling method. It requires physical effort but allows you to refill .5/.7L tanks anytime, anywhere. The SMACO High-Pressure Hand Pump includes an oil/water separator to ensure clean, dry air enters the tank with enough pressure required to properly refill a SMACO mini scuba tank.
Can I refill tanks with a bike pump?
No. Using a bike pump will not fill the tank and is unsafe. A standard bike pump can only reach 15–20 bar, which is far below the pressure required to properly refill a SMACO mini scuba tank.
SMACO tanks require high-pressure filling. Our manual hand pump is designed specifically for this purpose and can reach over 200 bar (with a maximum working pressure of 310 bar/4500 psi). With the SMACO hand pump, you may refill the tank multiple times—just be sure to:
- Allow the pump to cool for 3 minutes between inflation cycles
- Follow all instructions outlined in the user manual

How do I maintain it?
To properly maintain your SMACO Mini Scuba Tank, please follow these guidelines for daily and usage maintenance:
Daily Maintenance:
- Rinse the entire tank with clean water after each use, but avoid cleaning the interior to prevent water from entering and causing internal corrosion.
- Avoid exposing the tank to high temperatures, direct sunlight, or sources of heat.
- Regularly inspect the tank’s exterior and valve for any signs of damage or leakage. If any issues are found, contact the dealer or a qualified professional for inspection and repair.
- Store the tank in a vertical position in a dry and well-ventilated area, away from corrosive substances and high-temperature environments.
Usage Maintenance:
- Before using the tank, ensure that the valve is fully closed and verify that the connectors and accessories are properly installed. Avoid any loosening or air leakage during use.
- Use an appropriate air source for filling, such as a diving cylinder or a suitable electric pump. Follow the inflation equipment’s operating guidelines during the filling process.
- Do not exceed the tank’s maximum working pressure (200Bar/3000Psi). Refer to the user manual for the specified working pressure range and avoid overinflating the tank.
- Before diving, check the tank’s pressure to ensure it meets the safety requirements. Ensure the pressure gauge readings are normal and refill if necessary.
- When using the tank, maintain normal breathing and avoid excessive forceful breathing or breath-holding. Follow diving safety regulations and techniques, and avoid exceeding safe dive times or depths.
- After each use, clean and store the tank according to the recommendations in the user manual. Ensure proper protection and maintenance of the tank during storage.
Following these maintenance measures will help preserve the performance and safety of your SMACO Mini Scuba Tank. If you have any further questions or need more detailed instructions, please consult the user manual or contact our customer support team at contact@smacodive.com.
How often does the tank need servicing?
Have the product serviced annually by a professional. The gas cylinder requires a hydrostatic test every 5 years and should undergo visual inspection at least once a year.
Is certification required?
While certification is not required for shallow use, it is strongly recommended that all users receive proper instruction and certification from an accredited diving training agency. Improper use may lead to serious injury or death.
What are the imperative safety instructions to follow?
It is essential that anyone using a SMACO tank understands and follows these basic safety rules.
- Never hold your breath while ascending or descending.
- Do not descend if you feel discomfort or pressure in your ears, nose, or eyes.
- Ascend slowly—never faster than the smallest air bubbles rising around you.
- Check your pressure gauge frequently during use.
- Do not use the SMACO tank at the surface if the pressure gauge needle is in the red zone.
What other precautions should I take before diving?
Before each dive, inspect the tank for any signs of damage or leaks and confirm it is fully pressurized. Do not use the product if it appears damaged or malfunctioning.
Never dive alone. Always dive with a partner to ensure safe operation.
Users over the age of 60 must obtain medical clearance from a doctor prior to use. This product is not suitable for pregnant individuals or those with medical conditions that make diving unsafe.
Can I use this product in cold water?
This product is designed for use in waters with temperatures above 10°C (50°F). Do not use in colder conditions.
Heap 1 Electric Air Compressor
Can the HEAP 1 compressor be used to fill other types of tanks?
Yes. The SMACO HEAP 1 compressor can fill portable mini scuba tanks as well as other high-pressure tanks (such as paintball or airsoft tanks), as long as the tank is rated for the compressor’s maximum pressure.
Always confirm the tank’s pressure rating before filling to ensure safe operation.

Yes. The HEAP 1 compressor includes an oil-water filter and comes with two polymer precision carbon-rod filtration cartridges.
How loud is the HEAP 1 compressor?
The HEAP 1 compressor operates at approximately 70 decibels, which is similar to the sound level of a household vacuum cleaner. This makes it quieter than many comparable compressors.
Can it refill SMACO 1L and 2L tanks?
Yes. The HEAP 1 compressor is suitable for both SMACO 1L and 2L scuba tanks.
As a reference, it takes about 40 minutes to fill the 2L tank; the 1L tank, being half the capacity, fills in roughly half the time.
